PORT Adelaide has eased past an understrength Fremantle to finish its 2015 season with a 69-point win at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, 18.14 (122) to 8.5 (53).

Zac Dawson’s pre-match withdrawal with groin soreness took the total of Dockers’ changes to 12, and with four debutants their inexperience became obvious after quarter-time.

The Power dominated after a slow start, piling on nine straight goals through the second quarter and into the third; they kicked 17 of the game's last 21 goals.

Five talking points: Port Adelaide v Fremantle

Hamish Hartlett (28 disposals, one goal), Sam Gray (34, one), Brad Ebert (28 disposals) and Robbie Gray (23, three goals) starred through the midfield, Justin Westhoff (25, two) was hugely influential and Jay Schulz booted four goals in what might have been his last game for the club.

John Butcher (11 disposals, three contested marks, one goal) provided the 38,633-strong crowd great entertainment, taking strong contested marks, kicking a goal he should have missed and missing several he should have kicked.

"We mark it as a failure and a disappointing year," Power coach Ken Hinkley said.

"In 2013 I said we'll get what we deserve and I'll say it again today, we have got what we deserve and we finished 9th.

"12 wins and 10 losses is not an acceptable season but I'm not going to sit here and pot our blokes or our club."

Fremantle's stand-in skipper Michael Barlow (35 disposals) was a cut above his teammates and Matt Taberner (two goals) had a say in the bulk of the club's score.

The Dockers' efficiency around the ground was impressive early and they scored eight times from their first nine inside 50s, while Port Adelaide wasted possession and finished the opening term with 20 clangers to five.

The margin was drawn back to two goals when Westhoff converted minutes into the second and following a spectacular mid-air volley from Jake Neade, Schulz gave Port the lead with his second goal.

Schulz was involved again as Westhoff added another and when Hartlett drilled a great goal from deep in the pocket the home side had total control.

Fremantle was struggling to maintain possession and another turnover gifted the Power a seventh unanswered major.

Having sprayed three shots on goal Butcher launched himself over a pack to pull in a huge grab and was then swamped by his teammates when he converted a 50m set shot.

Barlow was doing everything possible to keep the Dockers competitive but their three goals in the third quarter were quickly and easily eclipsed.

Fremantle's focus had long switched to its qualifying final next week as Robbie Gray slotted a third to cap a sensational individual season.

"The real season starts next week, this is all … no one remembers any of this," coach Ross Lyon said of Saturday's loss.

"We always care but clearly we had the bigger picture in mind also … [but] those young players would have been really disappointed in me today if I didn't apply myself.

"[Selection is] always horses for courses; we need to go away and assess this performance."
