Eagles soar high in big win to maintain Giant hoodoo

Highlights: West Coast v GWS The Eagles and Giants clash in round five
Chris Masten was the Eagles' leading ball-winner on Saturday night

Chris Masten was the Eagles' leading ball-winner on Saturday night

WEST Coast continued its stranglehold over Greater Western Sydney with a thumping 87-point win at Domain Stadium on Saturday night.

Josh Kennedy kicked six goals as the Eagles clubbed the Giants 18.12 (120) to 4.9 (33) in front of 34,554 fans.

The Giants were held to the second-lowest score in their short history by a depleted Eagles defence led magnificently by young gun Jeremy McGovern.

Elliot Yeo was phenomenal in the first half gathering 25 disposals. Chris Masten (33), Andrew Gaff (32), Liam Duggan (25) and Luke Shuey (24 and two goals) fed off the superb supply of Nic Naitanui who dominated in the ruck and kicked two goals himself. Josh Hill also bagged four goals up forward.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson was very pleased with the pressure his side applied to the Giants.

"We wanted to bring pressure and I thought we did that for almost the full four quarters," Simpson said.

"I thought our defenders stood up.

"A lot of dirty ball came in and we were able to rebound it and then we got the game played in our half, and I thought our forward line supplied a lot of pressure. So that was pretty much the game."

Five talking points: Eagles v Giants

Dylan Shiel worked tirelessly all night for the Giants collecting 36 disposals. Devon Smith and Callan Ward worked hard and Toby Greene kicked two goals but the Giants' defence was under siege all night.

Giants coach Leon Cameron said his side took a step back.

"It's disappointing that you're five goals down at half-time and end up getting beaten by 80-odd points," Cameron said.

"I mean, that's not us, hasn't been us all through the NAB Challenge and the first four weeks. So our boys are really disappointed, we actually thought we had gone away from that.

"We watched it rear its head again tonight. It seems to be against the Eagles and we need to find a way next time we play them to not serve up that kind of tripe."

West Coast kicked the opening goal of the match from the first clearance. Shuey sharked the centre-tap and Kennedy marked his kick infront of Phil Davis.

Kennedy nearly had two in the first four minutes when he hit the post on the run. He landed another set shot from outside 50m to send an ominous warning to the Giants.

The visitors arrested the momentum through the midfield in the first term although they butchered the ball by foot.

The Giants kicked at 51 per cent efficiency and could have paid a heavier price for their turnovers. Greene cut the margin to just four points with his second goal after the quarter-time siren.

The Giants would kick just one goal after quarter-time as the Eagles ran away with the game.

Both sides went scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the second term before the Eagles blew the game open with an unanswered five-goal burst to claim a 36-point half-time lead.

It started with Hill's third of the match from a free kick. Naitanui kicked two in a row and Shannon Hurn even crumbed a goal off hands deep in attack.

Yeo was everywhere as the Eagles' midfield monstered the Giants. He gathered 14 touches for the quarter, took seven marks, delivered three inside-50s and had two score assists for the team.

WATCH: Game breaker - Elliot Yeo's blistering first half

Such was the Eagles' dominance that the Giants sent key forward Cam McCarthy to play as a spare man deep in defence.

The Eagles did have one concern with Kennedy heading to the rooms after appearing to hyper-extend his right elbow. He returned with it heavily strapped and came back on the ground just as Shuey delivered the Eagles' ninth goal on the half-time siren.

West Coast continued its march in the third term.

The quarter began with a sense of déjà vu. A Shuey clearance went to Kennedy who won a free kick and nailed his third goal.

Shiel continued to run gathering 12 touches for the term. Jeremy Cameron got on the end three forward forays but only kicked 1.2 for the term.

The Giants continued to make errors by foot coming out of defence. A kick-in that didn't travel 15m gave a goal to Jamie Cripps and saw the margin hit 50 points.

The Eagles piled on the pain in the last quarter kicking six goals to none.

West Coast travel to Adelaide to face the Power full of confidence next Sunday, while the Giants face Hawthorn in a big test next week.
