Match report: Crows soar over fading Eagles

Lee Gaskin  June 30, 2018 8:19 PM

Highlights: Adelaide v West Coast The Crows and Eagles clash in round 15

ADELAIDE is back off the canvas in breathtaking fashion, staging a dramatic final-quarter comeback to continue West Coast's form slump.

Skipper Taylor Walker played a starring role, booting three second-half goals, in the thrilling 10-point victory that snaps a four-game losing streak in front of an Adelaide Oval crowd of 44,771 on Saturday.

The Crows (7-7) looked dead and buried when a Scott Lycett goal put the Eagles up by 27 points late in the third quarter.

But they delivered a stunning response with six consecutive goals to keep their season alive after the off-field dramas of their ill-fated pre-season camp and massive injury toll, winning 12.16 (88) to 12.6 (78).

CROWS STORM HOME Full match coverage and stats

"It's a big win for us," Crows coach Don Pyke said.

"The players brought outstanding effort from the start of the game, didn't get return (for their effort), then in the last quarter they found another gear.

"That's exciting for them."

Walker was massive. He toed the ball out of the air in the goal-square to trim to margin to 20 points at three-quarter time and give the Crows some hope.

That was followed by a trademark 55m goal that just had enough distance to clear the goal-line.

GAMEBREAKER Tex leads from the front

Young defender Tom Doedee's first career goal will be one to remember, laying a brilliant tackle on Brendon Ah Chee and then slotting a 45m kick from tight on the boundary line.

A strong contested mark and goal from Walker continued the momentum before Hugh Greenwood's goal gave the Crows their first lead since the 23-minute mark of the first term.

WELCOME BACK, SLOANE Five talking points

The Eagles stayed within touching distance, but the Crows did enough to hang on for arguably their best of the year.

"The game wasn't going to be won if we sat back and tried to work our way through, we had to take the game on," Pyke said.

"They were given complete license to play with the attacking flair we know we're capable of."

All Australian defender Rory Laird (31 disposals) was influential in his first game back from a broken hand, Matt Crouch was strong with 32 touches (20 contested) and Doedee was resolute in defence.

Star midfielder Rory Sloane had 14 disposals after missing 10 weeks with a foot injury.

For the Eagles (10-4), it's their third straight loss after winning 10 consecutive games from rounds 2-11.

Coveted free agent Andrew Gaff showed why he's in demand with a brilliant midfield performance with a game-high 37 disposals, while All Australian defender Jeremy McGovern was dangerous in attack as the Eagles tried to manufacture a winning score without Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Mark LeCras.

McGovern, Lycett and Jamie Cripps were the Eagles' only multiple goalkickers with two each.

"I thought we were pretty brave for most of the night, but Adelaide elevated its effort in the last quarter and we just couldn't match it," Eagles coach Adam Simpson said.

"We just got smashed in the contests, around the stoppages and behind the footy.

"We were working really hard all night to try and hang in there, and obviously to get that advantage that we earnt, and then we gave it up in the last."

MEDICAL ROOM
Adelaide: Midfielder David Mackay suffered a rib injury late in the third quarter. He'll be assessed early next week and is in doubt for Friday night's clash with Richmond at the MCG.

West Coast: The good news for the Eagles is they appear to have a clean bill of health.
