THE AUSTRALIAN Football Hall of Fame turns 20 this year, with more than 260 players, coaches, umpires administrators and media members recognised since the inaugural function in 1996.

This year's class will be inducted at a function in Melbourne on Tuesday night with six members of the football community set to be honoured.

To be considered for inclusion, players must now be retired for a full five seasons. The AFL amended the eligibility rule last year after a recommendation from the Hall of Fame selection committee. Previously, players were eligible three years after retirement.

The Hall of Fame recognises those who have made "significant contributions" to the game at any level since 1858.

The 1996 induction function saw 136 people recognised, with Ron Barassi, Haydn Bunton snr, Roy Cazaly, John Coleman, Jack Dyer, Graham Farmer, Leigh Matthews, John Nicholls, Bob Pratt, Dick Reynolds, Bob Skilton and Ted Whitten named Legends.

Last year, the game's greatest goalkicker Tony Lockett was elevated to Legend status, with Peter Bell (North Melbourne and Fremantle), Michael O'Loughlin (Sydney Swans), Austin Robertson (Subiaco), Jason Akermanis (Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs), Neil Roberts (St Kilda) and Bob Hammond (administrator) inducted.
