GEELONG will take part in the first chartered flight for a home and away clash when it travels to take on West Coast in round three.

Virgin Australia's private service will provide the Cats with a return trip across the Nullarbor and take approximately five hours off their total travel time.

The players and staff will mix with close to 100 of the club's corporate partners with tickets all sold in-house for the journey that will still be managed by Virgin Australia.

They will board their flight from neighbouring Avalon Airport on Saturday lunchtime, saving travel time up the highway to Tullamarine Airport where they have previously departed for interstate matches.

Landing in Perth on Saturday afternoon, the Cats will then prepare for the clash with the Eagles on Sunday which starts at 2.40pm AWST.

Post-game on Sunday the Cats will avoid the dreaded 'red-eye' service back to Melbourne, instead anticipating arrival at Avalon Airport just after 1am.

Victorian clubs often depart Perth at around 11pm local time post-game, arriving back into Melbourne close to 5am.

The journey West is the Cats' first of two interstate trips inside three weeks. They face Port Adelaide on Saturday in round five, coming off a six-day break following a Sunday match against St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium.

In 2007 Collingwood famously chartered its own flight at low-altitude coming back from Perth ahead of a preliminary final against Geelong.

In 2013 Fremantle flew direct to Avalon Airport for its qualifying final against the Cats at Kardinia Park with a bus waiting on the tarmac to take the Dockers straight to the team hotel.
