ST KILDA midfielder Jack Steven has spent a second night in hospital after suffering a punctured lung against West Coast on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old, who has already been ruled out of Sunday's clash with the Brisbane Lions and could miss up to a month, picked up the injury late in the final term via an innocuous bump along the boundary line.

Steven continued playing but was in obvious discomfort during the closing stages of the match, often hunching over to catch his breath.

On Sunday, Saints football manager Jamie Cox said Steven would be "unable to fly for the next day or two and will remain in Perth with club doctor Tim Barbour before flying back as soon as he is medically cleared".

Initial scans cleared Adelaide key forward Josh Jenkins of structural damage to his ribs or internal organs following his collision with Hawthorn debutant Teia Miles during the first term.

The 28-year-old, who last year signed a five-year contract extension with the Crows, was in immediate pain from the Miles elbow he received to his left ribs in a marking contest.

Jenkins had difficulty breathing as he walked down to the rooms in the hands of trainers, and was taken to hospital for further observation shortly after.

The Crows are yet to rule Jenkins out of next Saturday night's Showdown against Port Adelaide.

Four-time Hawthorn premiership defender Grant Birchall had surgery on Sunday to repair the fractured jaw he injured in the loss to Adelaide.

The 29-year-old received a stray elbow from Crows forward Tom Lynch early in the first quarter while competing for an aerial ball, but he did not let the injury faze him for the rest of the match.

Hawks football manager Jason Burt said Birchall would miss "somewhere between 3-4 weeks".

Hawthorn vice-captain Isaac Smith suffered an apparent corked left thigh in a collision with Adelaide's Daniel Talia during the third quarter.

The 28-year-old returned in the last term after a lengthy stint on the bench, but hobbled off the ground again with less than seven minutes remaining.

Key Sydney big man Kurt Tippett has avoided bone damage after hurting his left ankle in the loss to the Western Bulldogs, but will miss at least one week with an "acute ankle sprain".

The 29-year-old first appeared to roll his ankle in a ruck contest in the first quarter and had the complaint examined at the interchange area.

Tippett returned to the field a few minutes later, only to re-injure the same ankle after landing awkwardly in a marking contest.

He could not place any weight on his injured leg as he was helped from the ground by trainers.

The 202cm goalkicker re-emerged from the rooms on crutches and took no further part in the game.

Tippett's ankle sprain adds to Sydney's injury woes, joining Dane Rampe (arm), Isaac Heeney (glandular fever), Jarrad McVeigh (calf), Gary Rohan (back/hamstring) and Tom Papley (knee/shin) on its growing casualty list.

Tippett missed nine games last year with a hamstring injury and suffered a hairline fracture to his jaw in the qualifying final against GWS, which kept him out of the semi-final against Adelaide.

In other injury concerns in round two:

- North Melbourne big man Majak Daw had his left ankle stomped on by teammate Ben Brown in a second-quarter marking contest, and required strapping on his left knee in the third term for a separate niggle. The 26-year-old played out the game.

- Geelong ruckman Rhys Stanley received a knee to his left ribs from Kangaroo Majak Daw in the final quarter. Club medicos assessed Stanley, who looked in obvious pain as he jogged off the ground.

- Hawthorn vice-captain Liam Shiels received a knee to his hip pointer from Adelaide's Brodie Smith late in the third quarter. Shiels came off the ground with the assistance of trainers, but managed to come back in the final term after a lengthy spell on the bench.

- Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin sported a black eye after injuring the right side of his face when bumping Collingwood's James Aish in the first term. Martin was assessed for a cheekbone injury and was able to get through the match with no major issues.

- Richmond forward Ben Griffiths suffered concussion after landing heavily in a marking contest in the third quarter against the Magpies, forcing him to miss the rest of the game.

- Brisbane Lions defender Darcy Gardiner pulled up sharply in the closing minute against Essendon, clutching his lower left leg.

- Carlton forward Jack Silvagni received a knock from Melbourne defender Tom McDonald in the second term. Silvagni hobbled off the ground and went straight into the rooms for treatment, before returning and getting through unscathed.

- Carlton midfielder Dale Thomas sent a scare through the Blues' camp after picking up a knock to his right knee in the second term. Thomas limped to the rooms and returned to the field with his knee heavily strapped.

- Western Bulldogs midfielder Lin Jong received an accidental elbow to his nose early in the third quarter against Sydney. The 23-year-old received medical attention before returning.

- Brisbane Lions speedster Lewis Taylor was left bleeding from the nose after coming into contact with Essendon's Dyson Heppell in the third quarter. Taylor needed medical treatment and played on with a bandaged nose.
