DESPITE a woeful start to the season that sees Hawthorn planted to the bottom of the ladder, captain Jarryd Roughead says his teammates are hungry for more success.

Roughead was one of three players who took to the field in the Hawks' 86-point thrashing at the hands of Geelong who have won four premierships under Alastair Clarkson's reign as senior coach.

Grant Birchall has also achieved the feat but is sidelined with a fractured jaw while Shaun Burgoyne also has four premiership medals, but one was with Port Adelaide in 2004, where Clarkson was an assistant.

A further seven players who faced the Cats on Easter Monday have tasted success in Grand Finals three times: Ben Stratton, Josh Gibson, Isaac Smith, Liam Shiels, Luke Breust, Jack Gunston and Paul Puopolo.

However, Roughead told Fox Footy on Monday he wanted more success before he retired, and pointed to the additions of Jaeger O'Meara, Tom Mitchell, Tyrone Vickery and Ricky Henderson as people who came to the Hawks to experience a premiership.

"I still think the hunger's there," Roughead said.

"We get four blokes in from other clubs to want to be successful. It's not a matter of just thinking 'Oh no, we've done that, we'll just let these guys take over'. These guys have come to the footy club to want to be part of a successful club.

"I want that to still happen because I'm hopefully still three or four years away from finishing. I don't want to just keep going like this."

At 0-4 and with a percentage of 56 heading into a clash with West Coast at the MCG next Sunday, this is unfamiliar territory for the Hawks, a team that has moved past the first week of finals every year since 2011.

The Hawthorn skipper referenced Fremantle and Gold Coast as teams that have been able to change their flagging fortunes after slow starts to the season.

"The last probably two weeks have been very unlike us. To look at what we've been able to do the past few years and then those two displays aren't up to scratch," Roughead said.

"We sit here zip and four but it's not all doom and gloom. Three weeks ago, we were saying the same about other teams and we can look at that and think, 'Why can't it be us?'."
