GEELONG has extended CEO Brian Cook's contract until the end of 2018.

It means the experienced administrator will be at the club for 20 seasons after taking on the job in March 1999.

Cook was West Coast's CEO from 1990-1998 meaning he will also match Bill Cookson and Frank Reid's records as the longest serving CEOs in AFL history.

Cook has overseen a remarkably successfully period at Geelong highlighted by three premierships, the redevelopment of Simonds Stadium, financial stability and cultural change.

However the club faces a set of new challenges as it makes the transition from one successful era to the unknown and attempts to retain a strong financial model.

Geelong president Colin Carter said the Cats board felt Cook was the best person to lead the club as they met those challenges.

"We see Brian [Cook] as one of the very best CEOs in Australian sport, and his track record over such a long period proves how good he is,” Carter said in a statement.

“Since he has been at Geelong the club has grown enormously, has achieved success on and off the field and seen a great culture built that we feel will sustain the club for generations to come."

North Melbourne tried to lure Cook at the end of 2012 and after seriously considering the opportunity he decided to stick with the Cats.

He now wants to steer the club through the next phase of regeneration.

"I look forward to continuing to take on the exciting challenges facing the club with the full support of the board, staff and players," Cook said.
