FORMER Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin will play his first game for Richmond in Thursday night's blockbuster clash with Carlton at the MCG.

Chaplin is the only new player named in either line-up, with first-round draft pick Nick Vlastuin and ex-Adelaide half-forward Chris Knights among the Tigers' emergencies.

New Blues coach Mick Malthouse and his fellow selectors have named a strong and experienced team.

Michael Jamison and Lachie Henderson fill the key defensive posts, and they are set to take the big jobs on Richmond forwards Jack Riewoldt and Ty Vickery.

Carlton has named big men Levi Casboult and Shaun Hampson in attack, with Matthew Kreuzer in the ruck.

Chris Judd has been picked on a half-forward flank, while new skipper Marc Murphy is among an impressive onball brigade.

Tom Bell, Jeremy Laidler and Sam Rowe are the Blues' emergencies.

Neither side had many players unavailable through injuries.

Carlton could not pick Jarrad Waite (back), while Richmond has left out defender Dylan Grimes and midfielder Nathan Foley, who have both had interrupted pre-seasons.
