ALASTAIR Clarkson says that if he can't lead the Hawks to a flag in the next two years, the advice of his former president may be spot on.

Clarkson has accepted an apology from Kennett, sending a text message to him at 6.16pm on Tuesday night. It read: "Not offended as I know your views, but unnecessary to draw attention to our club."

Clarkson started at Hawthorn in 2005 and is currently in the second year of a three-year contract.

Understanding his tenure has been reasonably lengthy, he even conceded some ground to the former Victorian premier.

"He might be right. Who knows?" Clarkson told Melbourne radio station SEN.

"If we don't win a flag in the next two years, he probably is right and that the club does need a change."

Clarkson has moved to calm the situation which exploded when Kennett called for a coaching change in the hours after the side's seven-point Easter Monday loss to Geelong.

"I'm not actually deeply offended by the comments, because Jeff's shared those views with me countless times over the last two to three years, that's his view on all people with lengthy tenures," Clarkson said.

"I respect his view, I don't actually agree with it, because I think that we've still got some things we can do at the footy club that are pretty special."

Clarkson said he hopes to again have a game of golf with Kennett at Melbourne's exclusive Capital golf course.
