Jarryd Roughead has extended his contract with Hawthorn until the end of 2016

VERSATILE big man Jarryd Roughead has signed a contract extension with Hawthorn, tying him to the club until the end of 2016.

Roughead's current deal was not due to expire until the end of next season, when he would have become a free agent.

But the 26-year-old put paid to any doubts around his future re-committing to the Hawks a season early.

"Any time you get to extend your footy career, it's always a good feeling, and now I suppose I can say I'll be a one club player," Roughead told hawthornfc.com.au.

"Hawthorn has been very good to me.

"I came here when I was a 17-year-old and when this deal is up I'll be 29. 12 or 13 years goes pretty quickly.

"For them to show faith in me, it was pretty much a no-brainer [to re-sign].

"When I'm 29 turning 30, I don't think I'll be going anywhere else."

Roughead starred in Hawthorn's win over the Sydney Swans on Saturday night, gathering 27 disposals and booting four goals.

His ability to play in almost any position on the ground has made him a vital part of Alastair Clarkson's mix.

He has so far played a total of 166 matches since being drafted at No.2 in the 2004 draft, including the Hawks' 2008 premiership.

Roughead joins Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, David Hale, Luke Breust and Ben Stratton in re-signing in recent weeks.

The club's biggest name Lance Franklin, a restricted free agent, has yet to put pen to paper, having decided to delay contract talks until the end of the season.
