HAWTHORN best and fairest winner Josh Gibson has extended his contract until the end of 2015.

The key defender was due to come out of contract at the end of next season.

He joins captain Luke Hodge in signing new deals with the Hawks in the past fortnight.

Gibson has played 83 games for the Hawks since crossing from North Melbourne at the end of 2009.

The 29-year-old played 24 of a possible 25 games this year, winning his first premiership, before taking out the Peter Crimmins Medal at the club's awards dinner a week later.

Gibson and his Hawthorn teammates are nearing the end of a two-week training camp in South Africa.

They will return to Melbourne and break for Christmas on Friday.
