The Melbourne Football Club is the oldest sporting club in the world and a founding club of the AFL. With more than 35,000 members, the Club, competes in a 23-round, plus finals competition and is based at Australia’s sporting icon, the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Club has gone through a period of significant change and has embarked on an exciting new journey to create a sustainable and ultimately successful sporting organisation.

The Club is seeking a Merchandise Manager to manage its retail operations, specifically related to on-field apparel, MFC licensed gear and merchandise.  The sales activity that this position will be responsible for includes the Club’s Retail outlet at the MCG, internet, phone orders, game-day and other event sales.

The Merchandise Manager will also act as an interface between the Club and the Melbourne Cricket Club’s joint venture partner, The Promotions Factory, to manage the design and promotion of Melbourne-specific apparel to the general community on game and event days.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Coordinating the day to day management of the Demons Shop at the MCG including staff rosters.
  • Liaising with customers for orders, stock inquiries and order fulfillments by mail, internet and phone.
  • Assisting and coordinating the production of direct mail catalogues, including photography, layout, distribution etc.
  • Developing and marketing memorabilia lines to mark milestones within the Club.
  • Marketing and promoting sales, including an active presence at various events and functions conducted by the MFC.
  • Identifying opportunities for new products with MFC branding.
  • Monitoring performance against, and be responsible for the achievement of, the merchandise budgets and providing timely analytical performance reports to management.
  • Coordinating and managing the MFC game day operations at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and other interstate venues, as deemed appropriate.
  • Playing a hands-on role in the merchandise co-operative joint venture for the management of merchandise rights at the MCG.
  • Provide assistance and direction with the selection and ordering of merchandise across all business units. 
  • Liaising with AFL suppliers to ensure the best possible supply of merchandise and the Club secures favourable trading terms.

Successful applicants will have:

  • Experience in retail and visual merchandising.
  • Experience in managing and training staff.
  • Experience in managing online retail operations.
  • An ability to control and manage stock levels to reduce obsolescence.
  • A capacity to use innovative marketing ideas to promote sales.
  • A customer service orientation.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Outstanding organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

Successful candidates will require a current Working With Children Check.  There is also a requirement to assist on match days and other events as required by the Club, which include weekends.
