THE AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed Round 16. The following charges were laid:

Charges laid

Luke McDonald, North Melbourne, has been charged with a Level One Tripping Offence (80 points, reprimand) for tripping Luke Breust, Hawthorn, during the second quarter of the Round 16 match between North Melbourne and Hawthorn, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 4, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record.

Drew Petrie, North Melbourne, has been charged with a Level One Misconduct Offence for Making Unreasonable and Unnecessary Contact to the Face (125 points, one-match sanction) for making unreasonable and unnecessary contact to the face of Brian Lake, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the Round 16 match between North Melbourne and Hawthorn, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 4, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Brian Lake, Hawthorn, has been charged with Misconduct against Drew Petrie, North Melbourne, during the third quarter of the Round 16 match between Hawthorn and North Melbourne played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 4, 2014.   

In summary, under the rules available to the MRP, the matter has been directly referred to the Tribunal for its determination and he cannot accept an early plea on this matter.

Shane Mumford, GWS Giants, has been charged with a Level One Striking Offence (80 points, reprimand) for striking Josh Jenkins, Adelaide Crows, during the fourth quarter of the Round 16 match between the GWS Giants and the Adelaide Crows, played at Spotless Stadium on Saturday July 5, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Adelaide Crows Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record.

Tom Rockliff, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a Level Two Striking Offence (125 points, one-match sanction) for striking Alex Rance, Richmond, during the second quarter of the Round 16 match between the Brisbane Lions and Richmond, played at the MCG on Saturday July 5, 2014.

In summary, due to his existing poor record and previous carry-over points, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Richmond Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of 68.75 points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 193.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 145.31 points and a one-match sanction.

Claye Beams, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a First Offence for Making Reckless Contact with an Umpire ($2600 sanction) for making reckless contact with umpire Rob Findlay during the third quarter of the Round 16 match between the Brisbane Lions and Richmond, played at the MCG on Saturday July 5, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a $1950 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for making reckless contact with an umpire is a $2600 sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a $1950 sanction.

Rory Thompson, Gold Coast Suns, has been charged with a Level Two Striking Offence (125 points, one-match sanction) for striking Travis Cloke, Collingwood, during the second quarter of the Round 16 match between the Gold Coast Suns and Collingwood, played at Metricon Stadium on Saturday July 5, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Collingwood Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

Brendon Goddard, Essendon, has been charged with a Level Two Engaging in Rough Conduct Offence (225 points, two-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Kane Cornes, Port Adelaide, during the first quarter of the Round 16 match between Essendon and Port Adelaide, played at Adelaide Oval on Saturday July 5, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction.

Josh Kennedy, West Coast, has been charged with a Level Three Engaging in Rough Conduct Offence (325 points, three-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Zak Jones, Sydney Swans, during the first quarter of the Round 16 match between West Coast and the Sydney Swans, played at Patersons Stadium on Sunday July 6, 2014.

In summary, due to a six-year good record, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Sydney Swans Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three Offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has an existing six-year good, reducing the penalty by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 182.81 points and a one-match sanction.

Other incidents assessed

The match day report laid against Essendon’s Paul Chapman for striking Port Adelaide’s Robbie Gray was assessed. After speaking to the umpire that laid the match-day report, receiving a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club and reviewing all available footage, it was determined the force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell and North Melbourne’s Scott Thompson from the first quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below the contact required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between the GWS Giants’ Callan Ward and the Adelaide Crows’ Rory Laird from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball was thrown in from a boundary contest and was loose after the hit out. Ward and Laird were coming at the ball from opposite directions when the pair made contact. it was the view of the panel that Ward was contesting the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between Port Adelaide’s Robbie Gray and Essendon’s Paul Chapman from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below the contact required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between West Coast’s Eric Mackenzie and the Sydney Swans’ Lance Franklin from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below the contact required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
