POSSIBLE father-son selections Alec Waterman and Jayden Foster are among the 91 draft hopefuls invited to test at state NAB AFL Draft Combines later this year.

Waterman, eligible to join West Coast as the son of Eagles premiership player Chris, was not among the list released last week for the national combine, but the midfielder will get his chance to screen in front of recruiters at the state-based testing day.

The Western Bulldogs have kept an eye on Foster's progress, given he can join under the father-son rule as his dad Peter played 163 games for Footscray between 1983-93.

Foster, a developing tall forward, has kicked 29 goals in 11 games for the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup side after being eligible for last year's draft.

Another prospect with a family link is Dylan Hodge, younger brother of Hawthorn premiership skipper Luke, who will be one of six players from the Geelong Falcons to attend the Victorian combine.

Under a different approach this year, AFL clubs were asked to provide a list of 50 players they wanted to see at the national combine.

After that was announced, the clubs each produced 25 names for the state-based combine, with players needing two nominations to attend one of the state screenings, which will be held in Melbourne on October 4, Adelaide on October 11 and Perth on October 12.

Due to the high number of NEAFL players picked to attend the national combine at Etihad Stadium between September 30-October 3, there will be no stand-alone northern states' screening.

Instead, the five players out of the competition who have received state combine nominations, as well as five players selected from Tasmania, are likely to come to Melbourne for the day of testing.

A number of mature-aged prospects have received invitations, including former West Australian Shannon Taylor, who was overlooked at the 2012 NAB AFL Draft but has enjoyed a solid season in the VFL for Frankston.

Nine VFL players will attend, while Norwood standout and ex-Western Bulldog Matt Panos is among the squad of 15 South Australian players.

Haiden Schloithe, who was delisted by Fremantle last year after two seasons on the club's rookie list, has caught the eye of at least two clubs with his WAFL performances and been asked to test for scouts.
