SOUTH Australian police have spoken to Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson on Monday as their investigation into an incident involving Clarkson and a Port Adelaide supporter continues.

Clarkson was involved in an altercation as he returned to his hotel from Adelaide Oval following the team's loss to Port Adelaide in round four.

A group of men walked alongside Clarkson and Hawks football manager Chris Fagan, yelling loudly in their faces.

The incident, which saw the Hawks coach apparently hit a man in the throat with an open hand, was filmed on a mobile phone.

Clarkson harasser asked to explain by local club

Police told AFL.com.au that they met with the Hawks coach in Melbourne.

"As part of the investigation we can confirm that we've spoken to Mr Clarkson in Melbourne today," a police spokesperson said.

The man involved was later revealed to be Luke Helps, who plays with the outer suburban Hackham Hawks.

Helps was asked to appear before his club's board to explain his behaviour.

"He wasn't representing the club at the time but, unfortunately for the young fellow, he does sort of represent us just as a member and a player all the time, I suppose," Hackham president Graham Thompson told ABC radio.

"So he does have a little bit to answer to."
