GEELONG premiership player Steve Johnson says he will let his emotions settle before deciding whether to try to continue his career at another club.

The 32-year-old enjoyed the perfect send off with departing teammates James Kelly and Mathew Stokes in the Cats' 39-point win over Adelaide at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.

Johnson, who is an unrestricted free agent, said he was yet to decide whether he would play on next season.

"As the game finished yesterday, the last 16 to 18 hours have been about enjoying the moment with my teammates," Johnson told Channel Nine on Sunday.

"It has been outstanding the way the boys got around us yesterday and made us feel really special.

"When the dust settles, I'll weigh up what I'm going to do next."

Geelong chief executive Brian Cook said Johnson was advised on Tuesday of the club's intention to move on, acknowledging the emotional impact the decision had on the three-time premiership great.

"I think 'Johnno' [Johnson] was the most difficult of the three, and rightfully so," Cook told Channel Seven on Sunday.

"In some respects he believes, strongly, that he's got more football left in his body, maybe another year or two.

"Johnno would have known on Tuesday and it took us three or four days for him to just evolve."

Like Johnson, Kelly and Stokes have not ruled out continuing their playing careers at other clubs next year.
