ST KILDA has not given any clear indication on when concussed forward Paddy McCartin will return to football.

McCartin was knocked out on Saturday against Gold Coast midway through the first term when he collided with teammate Tim Membrey and Suns defender Steven May in a marking contest.

It is the third time the 20-year-old has been concussed this year.

The 2014 No.1 draft pick trained with the main group on Monday at Seaford in a light session.

St Kilda football manager Jamie Cox said: "He's recovered well from the weekend.

"At this stage, we've already made the decision that Paddy will miss this week's football, which will give us a chance to do all the necessary medical tests on Paddy, and give us a much better idea about when Paddy's ready to return to play."

It was the fifth time he has been concussed since 2014.

McCartin has type-one diabetes, but Cox denied it was in any way related to his concussions.

"Our information is they're completely unrelated," he said.

"It hasn't been discussed at this stage. What's important to understand at the moment is we've ruled Paddy out this week," Cox said.

"There'll be some tests conducted during the week, which will give us a much clearer idea about when he's ready to play again."

The Saints have experience in dealing with concussions, with Billy Longer in recovery from the injury. Skipper Nick Riewoldt has suffered multiple concussions throughout his career and was sent to hospital last season after a huge clash with Adelaide's Brodie Smith.

"We're really confident with the amount of medical support Paddy's got around him," Cox said.

"Our medical staff have done a wonderful job in managing these issues in the past, and have called in a number of consultants in this space."

Cox said McCartin was not worried about having been concussed on multiple occasions.

"He's in a good space. He's OK," Cox said.

"He probably understands the odd knock's part of football."
McCartin has booted 10 goals from his nine games this season.

Longer trained on Monday, as did Jack Billings (ankle) and Nathan Freeman (hamstring).

Billings is set to return this week, although Cox said the club has not decided whether he would play AFL or VFL.
