FREMANTLE midfielder Stephen Hill says he has enjoyed stepping into an inside midfield role to help shoulder the load given the Dockers' injury crisis this season.

Hill had a career-high 37 disposals against Geelong on Friday night in a performance that coach Ross Lyon described as "really super".

The speedster has been known for his outside run from the wing across his 166-game career. He has also played off half-back at times this season.

But in the absence of star inside midfielder Nat Fyfe and following the injury to Michael Barlow in the third term, Hill moved inside in the second half and had 14 contested possessions for the match, the equal second-most of his career and his highest tally this season.

Hill told AFL.com.au he has enjoyed moving from the wing to the contest.

"It was good to be around the contest and keep working on my game inside, which I have been working on," he said post-match.

"We've had a few guys rotating through there. Connor Blakely is young and coming through there, myself, Lachie Neale, David Mundy. We've got to share the load and get a few guys running through there."

Hill said he felt like the Dockers were a chance when they closed within four points in the last quarter after a number of repeat inside 50 entries.

"It felt like we had some opportunities," Hill said.

"We just missed a few shots at goal. It felt like it got away a bit but Geelong is a great team.

"There's definitely positives. They're a top-four side. I felt like we had a crack.

"There'll be some positives and things we can keep improving on and hopefully we can fix them up for next week."
