Recently upgraded rookie Jonathon Beech was the main positive to come out of the Crows' 38-point loss, finishing with 23 touches, nine marks and a goal.

Yet-to-debut rookie Hugh Greenwood (17 disposals, four marks) and midfielder Mitch Grigg (team-high 24 disposals, six inside 50s) were other notable performers.

Forward Riley Knight had 19 touches, eight tackles and was the Crows' only multiple goalkicker with two, while rookie Keenan Ramsey had 17 disposals in his return from an ankle injury.

Cameron Wood kicked two goals in the Northern Blues' 73-point loss to Essendon. Jason Tutt was prolific with 28 disposals, as was Kristian Jaksch with 27.

Collingwood

Retiring premiership player Brent Macaffer was a steady presence in the midfield, kicking two goals as Collingwood lost their first match after 12 consecutive wins. 

The ruck duo of Jarrod Witts and Mason Cox dominated throughout the match, especially after the Bulldogs lost their ruckman to injury. 

Corey Gault also kicked a goal.

Essendon

Midfielder Will Hams continued his consistent run in his third straight VFL hit-out, accumulating 29 touches and kicking three goals in the Bombers' 73-point win.

Pacey midfielder Shaun Edwards, who has averaged around 25 disposals over the past month, collected another 25 touches and kicked three goals, while top-up recruit James Polkinghorne also put in a four-quarter effort with 26 disposals and two majors.

The win secured the eighth-placed Bombers a finals berth.

Fremantle

Out-of-contract veteran Tendai Mzungu used his 102 games of experience to steer his side to a 25-point win, finishing with an equal game-high 34 disposals and a goal.

Fellow out-of-contract Dockers Josh Deluca (28 disposals), Jack Hannath (two goals) and Tanner Smith (two goals) were handy contributors, but Smith's season may be over after he succumbed to an apparent hamstring injury.

Omitted ruckman Zac Clarke (25 hit-outs, 19 possessions) and midfielder Nick Suban (25 possessions, seven inside 50s) rounded out the Dockers' best.

Geelong

Midfield duo Billie Smedts and George Horlin-Smith reigned supreme for the Cats in the 35-point win, amassing 35 and 34 disposals respectively.

Smedts also took 13 marks and kicked a goal to cap his eye-catching performance, while livewire Nakia Cockatoo had 21 touches, laid nine tackles and kicked a goal in his return from a knee injury.

In attack, omitted pair Darcy Lang (22 disposals, seven tackles) and Shane Kersten kicked two goals apiece.

Gold Coast

This weekend: Sydney University v Gold Coast - elimination final - Saturday August 27, 11:45am, Blacktown

Yet-to-debut defender Tom Keough gathered 25 disposals and took nine marks in the heavy 77-point elimination final loss.

Utility Clay Cameron collected 25 disposals, 14 marks and kicked a goal, while Seb Tape rounded out the Suns' major ball-winners with 20 touches and six tackles.

The Suns fielded 16 members from their academy – a NEAFL record.

After being a late withdrawal for the Hawks' trip to Perth last week due to illness, midfielder Will Langford kicked three goals in Box Hill's 30-point loss.

Second-year defender Daniel Howe, who returned from a calf injury, and utility Dallas Willsmore (24 disposals) also led the way for their side.

Premiership defender Matt Spangher was given valuable game time in the forward line and chipped in with two goals, with draftee Blake Hardwick also adding two.

Box Hill finished the season in 10th spot on the ladder.

Melbourne

Casey's midfield was again busy in its win against Box Hill to wrap up the minor premiership. Alex Neal-Bullen finished with 32 disposals, and Viv Michie had 31 possessions and kicked two goals.

Young gun Clayton Oliver picked up 29 touches, and former co-captain Jack Grimes collected 26.

Ben Kennedy led the way up forward with three goals and 24 disposals.

Key forward Cameron Pedersen also finished with three goals.

North Melbourne

Draftee midfielder Ryan Clarke, who has played six games for the Kangaroos in his maiden season, took the honours as best on ground for Werribee in its 20-point win. 

Second-year speedster Will Fordham, axed backman Brad McKenzie and developing ruckman Braydon Preuss also featured in the best. 

Up forward, Robbie Nahas kicked three goals, draftee Ben McKay booted two, and Clarke, Fordham and McKenzie added singles.

Midfielder Anthony Miles was named the Tigers' best for the second consecutive week, guiding his side to a commanding 91-point win with a game-high 33 touches and 13 clearances.

Midfielders Jason Castagna (31 disposals) and Reece Conca (30 disposals, one goal), and ruckman Ivan Soldo (one goal) all worked tirelessly.

Yet-to-debut youngster Dan Butler and restricted free agent Ty Vickery – his second straight VFL game since being axed – kicked three goals apiece.

The Tigers finished the season in ninth position on the ladder, one game behind eighth-placed Essendon.

St Kilda

After kicking three goals from his 17 disposals last week, Cam Shenton was again prominent up forward with four goals in Sandringham's 20-point loss.

Midfielder Eli Templeton gathered 32 disposals and kicked a goal, and was joined among the Zebras' major ball-winners with rookie Josh Saunders, who had 26 possessions and booted a goal.

Second-year midfielder Jack Sinclair chipped in with two majors. 

Sandringham will meet Port Melbourne in an elimination final next weekend.

Axed defender Jackson Nelson responded to his demotion with 24 disposals and five marks in East Perth's 48-point win.

For the second week on the trot, draftee midfielder Luke Partington gathered 30 possessions – a team-high – and kicked a goal to continue to push his name up for an AFL debut.

Fellow draftee Kurt Mutimer impressed with 25 disposals, nine inside 50s and six tackles, while Eric Mackenzie gathered 20 touches and took nine marks in a strong display in defence.

Western Bulldogs

This weekend: Footscray v Collingwood - Saturday August 27, 12pm, Whitten Oval

Jake Stringer was named in the best, after picking up 22 disposals and kicking a goal in Footscray's win over Collingwood.

Young forward Bailey Dale kicked three goals and finished with 20 touches.

Former Lion Jed Adcock was steady, while ruckman Tom Campbell left the ground in the first quarter after a receiving a knock to the head.
