GEELONG would expect to be granted a home final at Simonds Stadium as soon as next season once the venue's redevelopment is completed by May.

The Cats' request comes with Greater Western Sydney likely to play its preliminary final against either Hawthorn or the Western Bulldogs at 24.000-capacity Spotless Stadium on September 24.

Asked whether the Cats deserve to host a final at Kardinia Park in 2017, Geelong CEO Brian Cook was adamant.

"We do. If it's good enough for GWS, it's good enough for us," Cook told SEN.

Cook said the club understood the difficulties of playing a final at the Cattery this season, with the stadium's attendance significantly reduced by stage-four redevelopment works.

Once completed, Simonds Stadium will have a capacity of 36,000.

Cook said he also knew it would be virtually impossible to stage a final at the venue against powerhouse clubs such as Hawthorn or Collingwood.

A crowd of 87,533 attended the Geelong-Hawthorn qualifying final at the MCG on Friday night.

The last final at Simonds Stadium was played between Geelong and Fremantle in 2013.

The Dockers won the qualifying final by 15 points.
