COLLINGWOOD'S American Pie, Mason Cox, claimed the first Brownlow vote for his country in Monday night's count.

The ruckman was awarded one vote from the umpires in Collingwood's round eight win over the Brisbane Lions.

The 25-year-old was playing in just his fourth game - having debuted on Anzac Day in round five.

He kicked four goals, had 11 hit-outs and took two contested marks in the 78-point belting at the Gabba.

Every vote: Round-by-round

Cox, who was not at the awards ceremony, gave his response in his own inimitable style.

"Apparently I just got a Brownlow vote. From what I hear that's a good thing," he tweeted.

How the Brownlow was won

Cox is not the first US-born player to poll.

Adelaide coach and former West Coast club champion Don Pyke was born in Illinois and won 13 votes but does not identify as American.
