THE BRISBANE Lions have re-signed rookie ruckman Archie Smith until the end of 2018.

The two-year contract extension will also see the 21-year-old permanently elevated to the club's senior list.

Smith, who stands at 201cm, made his debut for the Lions in round 19 after two years on the rookie list as an academy selection and impressed in his three games.

Lions talent manager Peter Schwab said Smith was a priority signing for the club, as it looks to secure its local products.

"It was important for us to secure Archie's services. As a Queenslander he is a great reflection of our commitment to drafting and retaining local talent," Schwab told the club's website.

"This (the contract extension) is also a reward for a very strong end to the 2016 season."

Smith, a talented junior basketballer, finished his debut game against Port Adelaide in round 19 with 20 hit-outs and 19 disposals to prove he is a viable rucking option behind Stefan Martin.

More opportunities could open up for Smith with Trent West retiring at the end of 2016 and he said he was looking forward to working under new coach Chris Fagan.

"I'm really excited. My first couple of years wasn't just about learning from Stef and Trent, it was also about learning the game in a lot of ways because I only played that year of football before I got drafted," Smith said.

"Now I really want to push for more senior games and have an impact on some wins ahead.

"I had a meeting with Chris on Monday. I really, really like him and have a lot of respect for him. I can’t wait to pick his brain about all the success he’s had at Hawthorn.

"I’m keen to get started, in a way it feels like a whole new experience with new players and new coaches that are coming through."

Smith was originally drafted with pick No.69 in the 2013 rookie draft.
