NATHAN van Berlo has not moved far in retirement after signing with Adelaide as a development coach for 2017.

The former Crows captain retired from AFL football earlier this year after 205 games over 12 seasons at West Lakes.

The 30-year-old has elected to join the Crows' coaching staff in his first year of retirement. He will work with the Crows' young players and the SANFL team as well as helping with the club's leadership program.

"I have had an incredible journey with the Adelaide Football Club and I am thrilled to be embarking on a new career at West Lakes," van Berlo told afc.com.au.

"Coaching is a fresh challenge and I'm excited for the opportunity to continue to learn and develop in an elite environment.

"I have great respect for the group of coaches at the club led by Don Pyke and can't wait to start working with them.

"We have a really exciting group of young players at the Crows and I look forward to being able to help them get the best out of themselves."

The Crows originally drafted van Berlo from West Perth in 2004 but he is settled in Adelaide.

He finished second in the Crows' best and fairest in 2011 and captained the club 68 times between 2011 and 2014.
