GEELONG has appointed the highly-regarded Troy Selwood to a newly created position as the club's talent identification manager.

Selwood will work under list manager Stephen Wells, managing the club's recruiting staff as well as identifying future talent as part of the club's list management team.

Selwood, who most recently worked as the team's VFL operations manager, has been at Geelong since 2011 and possesses a vast amount of experience.

"Troy is well respected by staff, players and club management and we see him as the ideal person for this new role,” Geelong’s general manager of football Steve Hocking said.

"Troy’s experience in various positions, most recently VFL operations, has given him the capability to now move onto a different role within the club. We are really pleased and see him as a fantastic addition to our recruiting team."

Selwood played a major role in recruiting a number of local players to the club's VFL team, with Tom Stewart, Timm House and Ryan Abbott, all of whom were selected by the Cats in last year's NAB AFL Draft, graduates from the program.

The Cats also selected nuggety defender Tom Ruggles as a rookie in 2015 after he won the VFL team's best and fairest in that season.

"Troy has an eye for talent. We see Troy as a welcome addition to our recruiting team, someone who will bring a different perspective and we are excited to have him join us," Hocking said.

Selwood, the older brother of Cats midfielders Joel and Scott, will begin his new role in early February.

His twin brother Adam is the head coach of West Coast's next generation academy.
