A TRIAL against North Melbourne midfielder Trent Dumont on a charge of aggravated robbery charge has been stopped.

Dumont and Joshua Lomas were accused of robbing a taxi driver of $70 in Adelaide more than two years ago.

But after two days of evidence in the Adelaide District Court the prosecution has dropped the charges against the pair.

Dumont and Lomas were accused of pinning down cab driver Malusi Ketse and stealing from him at the end of a taxi ride from the city to suburban Banksia Park in the early hours of October 12, 2014.

But the pair denied the allegation, saying the driver dragged Dumont out of the cab and fell to the ground after an argument about correct change.

Judge Paul Muscat said he wasn't surprised by the decision to drop the charges.

"What is surprising is that it got this far," he said.

"It's the right decision but ... it comes about two years too late."

During his evidence Mr Ketse at one stage refused to answer defence questions and his evidence appeared to contradict what was captured on the CCTV in his cab.

Immediately after leaving the dock on Wednesday, Dumont and Lomas hugged.

In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, North Melbourne welcomed the outcome of the trial.

"Trent and the club are obviously very satisfied with the outcome today," football manager Cameron Joyce said.

"Trent will now be able to put this all behind him and fully focus on his football and the great opportunity that awaits him this season."
