WHICH Gold Coast midfielder earned a Brownlow Medal vote in the final round of 2016, is fit, but likely won't line up in round one this season?

Still guessing?

The answer is Brayden Fiorini.

The 19-year-old Victorian took until round 22 to make his debut last year, and after a quiet game against Collingwood, gave a glimpse into his enormous ability with a stunning performance against Port Adelaide the following week.

In a depleted Suns outfit that ended up losing by 23 points, Fiorini finished with 32 disposals, seven marks, kicked two goals and laid 12 tackles.

But despite that showing, he's quite a way down the midfield pecking order entering the new season.

"We've got a lot of new mids coming in and it's just getting more competitive, so I can't rely on that last game to get me through," Fiorini told AFL.com.au.

"I've got to keep working hard on my game."

Pearce Hanley, Jarryd Lyons, Michael Barlow and draftees Jack Bowes and Will Brodie are just a few of the new midfield names vying for spots.

But Fiorini doesn't seem too phased.

He's overcome a slight knee niggle to put in a strong pre-season, and says he's in for the long haul.

Games in the seniors would be nice, but he's realistic that it might take some time to solidify a spot.

He said the Power game had given him the confidence he was good enough to forge a strong career.

"Just to get a taste for how quick the game is compared to the NEAFL level and just the work-rate you need. I'm still a fair bit behind compared to the other mids I played on, but it was definitely a good learning curve for me," he said.

"It's given me confidence, knowing what it takes. I didn't know what it took until I was thrown in there.

"I'm just focussing on getting through a full season, whether it's ones or twos, it doesn't really bother me.

Fiorini said he needed to improve in a lot of areas.

He's skilful, capable of winning his own ball and also able to find space on the outside, but is slightly built.

"The change of pace and transition from offence to defence goes really quickly, so I have to build up the power in my legs," he said.

"Also the physical side, being able to body up against the other mids is important. There's a fair bit I need to work on."
