NORTH Melbourne forward Mason Wood will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after suffering a hamstring strain at training last Friday.

The 192cm forward went for scans after suffering the injury at Arden Street and the club has confirmed he'll be sidelined for close to two months.

"Mason will start his rehabilitation program straight away," North Melbourne football manager Cameron Joyce said on Saturday.

"We're obviously hoping to have him available as quickly as possible but every step will be taken to ensure he can recover properly and then have an impact for us for the remainder of the year once he's cleared to play."

Wood, 23, played eight impressive matches last year before suffering a serious knee injury that ruined the majority of his 2016 campaign.

He featured in the Roos' opening JLT Community Series clash with Sydney last Sunday and slotted two goals in a promising performance.

With Drew Petrie having moved to West Coast, Wood was expected to be a key part of the Kangaroos' forward line this year alongside Jarrad Waite and Ben Brown.

A two-month layoff would likely see Wood miss the first four rounds of the home and away season.
