DAYNE Beams will lead the Brisbane Lions in 2017 after being confirmed as the club's new captain on Tuesday morning.

Beams takes over from Tom Rockliff, who was named vice-captain.

Dayne Zorko is the deputy vice-captain, while Stefan Martin, Allen Christensen, Ryan Lester and Harris Andrews make up the rest of the seven-man leadership group.

Beams is the most credentialed Lion, having won a premiership with Collingwood in 2010, an All Australian berth in 2012 and best and fairests at both clubs.

The 27-year-old said he was "deeply honoured" to be appointed to the top role.

"I like to think I'm an action-based leader, I lead by example," Beams said.

"I do what I say and I think the overriding thing is I'm really passionate about the football club and where it's heading.

"We've got some emerging young talent and I'm looking forward to seeing that blossom."

Beams was appointed after a player vote on Monday decided the seven leaders, before CEO Greg Swann, football manager David Noble and the coaching staff, led by Chris Fagan, made the captaincy call.

Rockliff's appointment as Beams' understudy was a slight surprise, after the former skipper endured a tumultuous 2016, where he was disciplined by the club for his use of social media and was reported to have put the feelers out for a trade.

But in line with what he's said since arriving at the club, Fagan again sung Rockliff's praises.

"Tommy Rockliff's come a long way," he said.

"I think if we'd have done the vote four months ago, I'm not sure that Tom would have featured as well as he has.

"He's earned a lot of respect from his teammates by the way in which he's gone about things.

"It's just been his work ethic, improving his lifestyle, being a happier, more positive person around the football club, he's done all those things and deserves the honour of being the vice-captain."

Beams said he had spoken to Rockliff since the decision.

"I said to Tom I need his support and Tom's really open to that," he said.

"I've learnt a lot from Tom.

"When Chris came in he had a clean slate for all players and what I can say for Tom the last four months is he's been very very good, he's worked on a lot of things and I couldn't be happier to have him in my corner."
