RELIEVED Giants defender Adam Kennedy has signed a three-year contract extension after fearing a season-ending knee injury would also end his time at the club.

Kennedy, 24, had been in positive discussions with Greater Western Sydney early this season about securing a new deal, but he was concerned the goalposts might have moved after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the round seven loss to St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

The Victorian needn't have fretted, with the Giants quickly allaying his fears by re-signing him until the end of 2020.

The 83-gamer is grateful for the support he has received from the club, particularly football manager Wayne Campbell, coach Leon Cameron and head of athletic performance David Joyce.

"Just before I did my knee I started (negotiations with) the club and they said they want to keep me on, which I was over the moon about because I love the club; and then after I did my knee, I was a little bit worried and so was my family, being (the) last year of (my) contract," Kennedy told the club website.

"But the Giants pretty much got straight on the phone and said, 'Mate, nothing's changed – we want you for another three years.'

"It just shows what type of club this is. Obviously I'm out for the year and we've got a lot of guys signing on, and for them not to forget about me – you do play things (out) in your head – it makes me feel at home."

An "absolutely stoked" Kennedy – who underwent knee surgery little more than three weeks ago – believes there are exciting times ahead for the Giants, and he can't wait to return to the field next season.

"(This year) I'll watch on and cheer the boys on and help out where I can. I look forward to next season and coming back bigger and better," he said.

Campbell said the Giants had been keen to tie up Kennedy despite the injury.

"Adam is a highly respected and really popular member of the playing group, so we're delighted he's recommitted to the GIANTS," Campbell said.

"He's been here from the start and has been a key part of the culture we've built, and wants to keep growing with the club.

"While 2017 hasn't panned out the way he was hoping, we look forward to Adam returning to the field in 2018 and playing a key role for the Giants for many years to come."

Kennedy was the fourth Giant to recommit to the club inside a week, following draftees Tim Taranto, Will Setterfield and Harry Perryman, each of whom also signed on until 2020.
