ST KILDA youngster Hugh Goddard will miss the remainder of the 2017 season after succumbing to a foot injury.

Goddard is set for surgery to repair ligaments in his right foot, with the club hopeful his recovery period will have him ready to resume for the start of pre-season training.

The 20-year-old, whose 2016 season was ended by a ruptured Achilles in round 11, suffered the foot injury while playing for Sandringham against the Western Bulldogs in the VFL two weeks ago.

Saints football manager Jamie Cox said it was another unfortunate setback for the defender, particularly after being cut down by the Achilles injury in his only senior game last season.

"The way in which Hugh approached his rehabilitation last season was first class and testament to his professionalism," Cox told saints.com.au.

"The new injury is unrelated to the Achillies but unfortunately means another extended break on the sidelines which we are certain he will approach in the same manner.

"He remains an important member of our playing group and we will make sure he is well supported to overcome this setback."

Goddard has played nine games in two seasons for St Kilda after being drafted with pick No.21 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

Goddard remains contracted to the Saints until the end of the 2018 season.
