CARLTON has received a significant boost ahead of Sunday's clash with the Western Bulldogs, with confirmation reborn defender Liam Jones has signed a new two-year contract.

The new deal ties the 26-year-old to the Blues until at least the end of 2019.

AFL.com.au reported a fortnight ago that Jones had opened contract negotiations with the club after reviving his career in defence.

A positional change from the forward line to defence sparked a resurgence for Jones, whose career appeared to be at the crossroads following a lengthy stint in the VFL.

The former Bulldog has thrived since being trialled down back at VFL level and earned a senior call-up in round 12 against Greater Western Sydney.

His highlights since returning include restricting Giants forward Jonathon Patton to two goals and holding Gold Coast co-captain Tom Lynch goalless the following week.

Jones, who did not let the uncertainty about his playing future affect his on-field performance in recent months, expressed his delight at signing the new contract.

"The move into the back six has obviously reinvigorated me and I'm really grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to go around again for the next couple of years," Jones told carltonfc.com.au on Sunday.

"I know I have a long way to go with my development and I am continuing to learn the defensive craft, but I am excited to be continuing on for the next couple of years with the club I love, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this young group can achieve in the coming years."

Jones is averaging more one-percenters than any other player in the competition (11.2 per game).

Blues head of football Andrew McKay praised Jones' progress since making the switch to the opposite end of the ground.

"It's a fantastic example of someone having an opportunity put in front of him and making the most of it," McKay said.

"His attitude and approach to learning his new role should be praised, and his terrific form has been rewarded with a new contract.

"Liam has a lot to learn as a defender still, but we know he will continue to work hard and apply himself on developing his craft over the next two years."

Jones was first recruited by the Western Bulldogs with pick No.32 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, before being traded to the Blues during the 2014 trade period.

The 198cm Tasmanian has played a total of 88 games, including 66 for the Bulldogs, and kicked 84 goals since debuting in round 18, 2010.
