THE CAVALRY is on its way back for Gold Coast with co-captain Steven May and midfield master Gary Ablett both expected to play Richmond on Saturday night.

The pair were absent from Saturday's loss to the Western Bulldogs with hamstring complaints but need to only get through training this week to resume their places.

"Gary and Steven May are both in the same category, both had minor hamstring issues," football manager Marcus Ashcroft told goldcoastfc.com.au.

"They're both expected to be available this weekend, but we need to get through the week and they'll do a fitness test on Thursday to confirm that."

May has healed particularly quickly after sustaining his injury in the opening quarter of the loss to Collingwood less than two weeks ago.

With Jack Leslie (leg) and Rory Thompson (hamstring) already ruled out of contention, May's return in defence would be a huge boost for the struggling Suns.

Ablett has missed three of the past five matches with a combination of calf and hamstring issues.
