ESSENDON coach John Worsfold has extended his contract with the club for a further two seasons, tying him to the Bombers until at least the end of the 2020 season.

Worsfold's signature had been expected for some months, and the Dons announced the re-signing off the back of round one's impressive win over Adelaide.

"John has been a great addition to our club through what has been a unique and challenging period," said Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell.

"He has brought an enormous amount of stability, and has shown wonderful resilience and commitment to see Essendon emerge in a better place."

Worsfold said he was delighted to pledge his future to the Bombers.

"I'm really excited to re-commit to the club and head into the next three years with a clear vision of what we want to achieve together," the coach told the club's website.

"It just helps everyone relax now, and we all know that we’re settled and we’re ready to go with it.

The 49-year-old will extend his senior coaching tenure to 17 years.

A premiership coach at West Coast, Worsfold joined the Bombers late in 2015 amid fallout from the club's drugs saga and last season took them from bottom of the ladder to the finals.

"I have absolute confidence in the things the club is putting in place. I’m rapt to be part of it. It’s all hard work, but that’s what we’re here for," he said.

"We have a playing group which has established a really clear vision, a strong culture and elite standards. We believe this group of players is going to play a lot of football together, and hopefully win a lot of finals moving forward."
