PORT Adelaide runner Chad Cornes has been handed a one-game suspension for swearing at North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein.

The incident occurred when Goldstein was involved in a collision with Power vice-captain Ollie Wines in the third quarter of the round six clash at Etihad Stadium last Saturday.

Goldstein was subsequently fined $1500 for misconduct against Wines.

Cornes swore at Goldstein from close range and the exchange was reported by the AFL's match day manager.

AFL Football Operations Manager Steve Hocking said Cornes committed a serious breach of the rules regarding runners.

"Under AFL rules, club runners are prohibited from any interaction with umpires or opposition players," Hocking said.

"It was the AFL's view that Cornes' actions had the potential to escalate an on-field incident and was a major breach of his role."

Cornes was renowned for his toughness during his 239 games with the Power from 1999 to 2011, including playing in the club's inaugural AFL premiership in 2004.

Power defence development coach Trent Hentschel will replace Cornes as the club's runner for Saturday's game with West Coast at Optus Stadium.

Hentschel was a talented, but injury-prone key forward who played 74 games for Adelaide between 2003 and 2010.
