ALMOST seven years ago to the day, a 15-year-old Lachie Weller was in the Metricon Stadium grandstands cheering his older brother Mav in Gold Coast's first ever game at its new home ground.

On that late May night in 2011, the Suns held an 11-point lead at half-time, only to be steamrolled by eventual premier Geelong in the second half.

Steve Johnson kicked seven goals and James Podsiadly four.

Now, in Saturday twilight, Weller will live out his own dream of running on to the Carrara ground in a Suns jumper for the first time.

The coincidence of also playing Geelong wasn't lost on the 22-year-old.

"I remember being here for the first ever Suns game and watching Mav play," Weller told AFL.com.au.

"It's pretty special now that I get to run out on Metricon in a Suns jersey.

"It's something I always actually thought of and it's finally come. I'm pretty excited."

Weller moved from Tasmania to Gold Coast with his family as a teenager to follow Mav's career, spending time in the Suns' Academy before being drafted by Fremantle in 2014.

After three seasons and 47 games with the Dockers, he asked for a trade back during the last off-season.

Following a slow start to his time in Suns colours, Weller has become more at ease as his first season has worn on.

"I think I'm starting to get used to playing with the boys and I think they're getting used to playing with me," he said.

"They're also trying to learn a new game-plan as well, and I think it's all starting to come together. There's a lot more improvement.

"I did start a bit slower, but I'm starting to feel a bit more comfortable."

He said coach Stuart Dew had helped his transition from Fremantle.

"He's pretty easy going, he lets you be yourself," Weller said.

"I feel like I've been coached by him for a few years. We had that trust straight away and that relationship built really quickly.

"We're all really impressed by him, the boys feel comfortable around him and we think we can play our best footy under him."
