ST KILDA talls Jake Carlisle and Josh Bruce have suffered injury setbacks with the latter breaking his leg in a training incident.

Bruce will be sidelined for the remainder of the season after fracturing a fibula in a collision with a teammate in a marking contest on Thursday.

It is understood Bruce was set to return to the senior side this weekend after working his way back through the VFL from a back injury earlier this season.

Carlisle will miss the Saints' trip to face Port Adelaide on Saturday.

It is believed the star defender had been receiving treatment to relieve tension on a rib injury prior to training on Thursday.

Carlisle received an injection before suffering a minor puncture to his lung, which is expected to have him in the frame to play against Carlton next Friday night.

The defender left the field late in the Saints' win over Melbourne after copping a knee to the back from Jesse Hogan.

He later returned to play out a starring role in the club's third win of the season.

"There is a small risk in treating rib injuries that this type of complication can occur," Saints' head of football Simon Lethlean said.

"We'd love to have them both out there this weekend but the reality is they won't be, and we will need guys to step up and fill the void."

The key injuries come after young forward prospect Josh Battle (eye socket) and defender Nathan Brown (hamstring) were ruled out for at least the next fortnight.
