COLLINGWOOD's key defensive stocks have suffered another blow with veteran Ben Reid ruled out for at least the next month after surgery on both knees.

Reid's setback further compounds the Pies' injury woes after key defender Lynden Dunn's season ended with a ruptured ACL diagnosed on Monday.

Reid had been dealing with calf soreness in recent weeks before knee concerns surfaced, and was put under the knife with a view to have him return for finals.

"He had a scrape on both knees under surgery Monday and we'd expect that will fix the problem," head of football Geoff Walsh told the club's website.

"It's probably a four-week job before he can get back into contention for full training and selection."

The 2011 All Australian defender spent time in attack prior to injuries this season, but is expected to focus on defence heading into September to cover the absence of Dunn.

In better news for the Pies, swingman Darcy Moore will return through the VFL on Sunday after re-injuring his hamstring in mid-May.

Josh Smith (hamstring) will join Reid for the clash with Werribee, but Jamie Elliott and Jarryd Blair (both hamstrings) will need to wait at least another week.

Levi Greenwood has been cleared of concussion symptoms stemming from a high Dale Thomas bump in round 14 and is available for selection.

Travis Varcoe will put his hand up for AFL selection after getting through unscathed in his VFL comeback from a hamstring strain last week.

Meanwhile, James Aish (knee) and Alex Fasolo (ankle) are in the frame to play in the VFL next after speedy recoveries from long-term injuries.
