BRISBANE defender Matt Eagles requires surgery for an ongoing abdominal/groin injury and will miss the rest of the season.

Eagles first inflamed the area in the Lions' round 10 loss to Sydney and has continued to feel pain despite the club exhausting its non-surgical options.

Brisbane's general manager of football David Noble said the club was "disappointed" for Eagles, who will have surgery next Monday.

The 28-year-old played four games in his second season with the Lions, making a dramatic progression after winning Foxtel's reality show 'The Recruit' in 2016.

Eagles quickly became a cult hero at the Gabba, kicking a goal in the Lions' round nine win over Hawthorn, to the rapturous applause of the home crowd.
