Another Don done: Big brother off-loaded

Howe still hurt, fitness with the stars Nat Edwards with the latest news

JACKSON Merrett has been cut by Essendon.

The speedy half-forward/midfielder has managed just two games since the end of 2016 and on Monday was informed he would not be offered a new deal for 2019.

The older brother of midfield gun Zach has played 56 games for the Bombers since being drafted with pick 31 in 2011.

His best season came in 2015 when he played 15 games and kicked eight goals.

"On behalf of the Essendon Football Club I would like to thank Jackson for his commitment to the club," coach John Worsfold said.

"The attitude and leadership he has shown both on and off the field is truly commendable. He has outstanding character and has helped to mentor and support the younger players on our list.

"Jackson is a highly respected player of this club and we wish Jackson all the best with his future endeavours."

The 25-year-old was linked to a move to Port Adelaide last year but stuck with the Bombers for an extra season, however he managed a total of just 23 disposals in his two games this year (in rounds five and six).

His imminent departure follows Tuesday's news that the club would not offer a deal to star veteran Brendon Goddard for next year.
