HAWTHORN has backed Sam Mitchell to help mould its on-ball brigade in 2019, with the champion centreman named as the club's midfield coach.

The Hawks revealed their coaching line-up on Thursday with Chris Newman stepping into a new role as stoppages coach after a successful stint as Box Hill Hawks VFL coach that culminated in last year's premiership victory.

After four seasons as a line coach Adem Yze will play a critical role in opposition analysis as head of match day strategy and opposition.

Damian Carroll will assume a key role as head of development and learning, while Darren Glass (defence) and Scott Burns (forwards) have also been assigned their responsibilities for 2019.

Max Bailey has been named as the club's new VFL coach, taking over from Newman.

"Each of our line coaches have a great understanding of Hawthorn's program, and we're confident they'll complement each other nicely," Wright told the club's website.

"They've all captained their respective clubs at different stages during their careers, which demonstrates the quality of leadership we have within our coaching panel."

Alastair Clarkson will continue as senior coach for a 14th season. The Hawks have played in five grand finals and 10 finals series in that time, with Clarkson boasting a winning percentage of 62.61 per cent.
