PORT Adelaide midfielder Ollie Wines will re-consider water-skiing this close to the start of the season and says he's ready to captain the Power.

Wines could miss the first four rounds as he recovers from a shoulder injury sustained in a water-skiing accident two weeks ago.

"In the context of things, I've probably got to look at the times I'm doing these things," Wines told reporters on Wednesday.

"Perhaps this close to the start of the season, only eight weeks out, is maybe an unnecessary time to be doing it.

"I've probably got to look, once I'm all healed, now that footy season's started, the times that it's appropriate for me to be doing it."

Wines will consider giving up wakeboarding and only go water-skiing a couple of times a year to decrease the risk of injury.

"It's something I love doing and at this stage, it's something I'll continue to do," he said.

"I've got to take more measures now to decrease the risks even more.

"Whether that's not wakeboarding and just skiing and just keeping it to a couple of times a year.

I understand I'm a full-time athlete, this is my job and any injury that I sustain outside football jepordises my career.

"It was a freak accident, the rope pulled my arm and unfortunately pulled my shoulder out."

Wines's right shoulder will be in a sling for a few weeks after arthroscopic surgery.

His aim is to return in the first month of the season.

FULL FIXTURE Every round, every game

"Generally, the surgeon puts a 10 to 12-week recovery, so either side of that," he said.

"It is a long season, so if I am to miss a couple of games to make sure I can play the whole season and hopefully finals, we'll do that.

"I haven't put a round on it – it could be round three, it could be round four, it could be earlier."

He also said there was a "big chance" he would have a full shoulder reconstruction at the end of the season.

The Power is yet to appoint a captain after Travis Book stood down at the end of last year.

Wines has been the Power's vice-captain for the past two seasons and committed his future to the club by signing a four-year contract extension until the end of 2022.

He is one of the frontrunners for the position alongside Tom Jonas and Brad Ebert.

"It'd be a great honour to captain this club and I'd love to do it, but at this stage, I'm one of many candidates who could fill that," Wines said.

"I do think I'm ready to captain this club, but I'm not the one who has that say.

"As a playing group, as a coaching group, as a club, we get to decide that and that will take its place in due course."
