BRISBANE captain Dayne Zorko has signed a one-year contract extension, ensuring he will be a 10-year player with the Lions.

The 30-year-old already had two seasons remaining on his deal but has now locked himself in at the Gabba until at least the end of 2021.

"The club's given me great opportunities throughout the last eight years," Zorko said.

"You've got that sense that there's good times ahead and I certainly want to be a part of it.

"In the past 18 months the club has set up some more stability and grown our playing list with some really great players."

The new contract continues a remarkable career for the explosive midfielder, overlooked in four straight drafts and not making his debut until the age of 23.

Since then Zorko has played 144 games, of a possible 148, been named an All Australian, played in the International Rules Series and won four successive best and fairests.

He was recently appointed Brisbane's captain officially for the first time after taking over in a caretaker role from Dayne Beams last season.

Coach Chris Fagan said Zorko has been a joy to coach.

"First and foremost it's his passion for the game," Fagan said.

"He loves the game and he loves the Lions.

"He loves his teammates and it shows in the way he plays.

"The thing I always get excited about most is he is one of the best defensive players in the competition. He's always willing to lay a tackle and apply some pressure.

"For us, that is of incredible value in that area and it's fantastic that he's signed again."

The new deal means Zorko will be at the club when it enters its new training and administration facility, due to be completed by the start of 2021.
