PORT Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley is hopeful ruckman Paddy Ryder will overcome a fractured cheekbone in time for the Power's round one clash with Melbourne in a fortnight.

Ryder came off worse for wear when he collided with teammate Robbie Gray in the fourth quarter of the Power's JLT Community Series game against North Melbourne at Alberton Oval on Saturday.

"He's okay, which is pretty good," Hinkley said.

"He's got a high, little depression up on his cheekbone, they're quite simple.

"Sounds a bit cold, but they'll just flick that out and I'd say, realistically, he's a more than good chance to play round one."

It's the second week in a row Ryder has sent a scare through the Power after rolling his ankle against Adelaide in Port Pirie.

"I've had two weeks of nightmares with Paddy," Hinkley said.

"Last week, I saw him go down late.

"Nearly made a decision to take him off at three-quarter time from now on.

"He's still got a bit to get through.

"He's got to have a little procedure, so I shouldn't be as confident about round one, I should just be cautious.

"There's no doubt at all he'd play round two. There's a procedure to be done, so every time there's something like that to be done, you've got to be a little bit cautious."

The news isn't as good for defender Jarrod Lienert, who is likely to miss the start of the season after suffering medial damage to his knee.

"Looks like he's got a small medial, so we'll scan that tomorrow and see how that turns out," Hinkley said.

"Again, that's probably, if it is that, it's probably two to three, maybe four weeks, so he could be in some doubt for round one."

The Kangaroos had their own injury concerns out of the 21-point loss.

Halfback flanker Marley Williams had a tight calf in the first quarter and missed the rest of the game, while defender Sam Wright couldn't take a trick, experiencing quad tightness in the last term after copping a big hit from Power forward Todd Marshall earlier in the game.

"Marley just tightened up a bit in his calf, a bit of a spongy surface out there, so he just felt a little bit tight," Kangaroos coach Brad Scott said.

"We're optimistic he'll be okay.

"We've had a few, so we're overly cautious for a reason.

"We'll get Wrighty assessed as well. He had a hamburger with the lot today, he had a few things going on."

The game turned into a shootout, with the new set starting position rules having a significant impact in 35 goals being kicked.

"It will make the game better," Scott said.

"Not necessarily easier to coach, it will be really hard to stop when teams are really dominant, but so it should be.

"The game was too easy to shutdown at times with the rules the way they were.

"Even if it's successful, it's not necessarily the best look for the game.

"The changes are significant."
