After two knee constructions and almost two years on the sidelines (with the exception of a few games with the Lions Reserves in 2010), the Lions’ first pick from the 2009 AFL National Draft, Callum Bartlett, is set to make his return to the Reserves side this weekend against the GWS Giants in Sydney.

Senior Coach Michael Voss is now hoping that the 20 year-old midfielder stays injury-free so he can potentially join the growing list of Lions debutants by season’s end.

“It’s been really good to have debuted 10 players on our list so far this season”, Voss said.

“We’ve played about 36 of our list in 2011. The only one on our list now that I think we haven’t played is Callum Bartlett”.

However, that could soon change for Bartlett who will look to push into the senior side before the 2011 season comes to a close.

“Hopefully, fingers-crossed, we get to see Cal at some stage before the end of the year,” Voss said.

Lions Reserves Coach Nathan Clark said Bartlett will likely be eased back into action this week.

“Cal should play - he was actually pretty close last week,” Clarke said.

“The plan is to give him around 80 minutes or so of game time. There’s no point giving him just 40 minutes coming back, it disrupts the fabric of the team.”

The former Geelong Falcons recruit was drafted as a neat, quick and agile goal-kicking midfielder with great ability to win the ball and use it affectively.

He presents another exciting option for the Lions’ future midfield brigade alongside the likes of Daniel Rich, Jack Redden, Tom Rockliff, James Polkinghorne, Jared Polec and Ryan Harwood.
