CARLTON need to keep using their speed to win matches, forward Jeff Garlett said in the aftermath of the Blues' decimation of Gold Coast.

Garlett, who is one of a number of speedy small forwards in Carlton’s arsenal,  had a field day against the Suns, kicking five goals in the 119-point win.

Andrew Walker also bagged five while Bret Thornton had four goals.

Despite the occasion of the Suns’ first game in the AFL, Garlett said coach Brett Ratten had wanted the Blues to stick to their game plan early and it worked, with Carlton obliterating Gold Coast in a 59-7 first quarter.

Garlett was integral to that start, booting two majors.

"The message was to get out there and play our normal game and get the four points," he said.

While the Blues have two wins from two matches, their toughest challenge will come this Friday blockbuster against reigning premiers Collingwood at the MCG.

It is a challenge the young Carlton side seems set to relish.

"I am not sure how we will go, hopefully we will have a good crack at them," Garlett said.

"We are all young and fresh and we are trying to use our speed to win games."

Garlett kicked 41 goals from 21 matches in 2010, while collecting an average of 12 disposals.

He is clearly happiest on the road, leading the Blues for goals interstate, with multiple bags in all but one of Carlton’s matches outside Victoria.

The West Australian has started this year just as well, with seven goals, including last night’s five.

"It is good to get my performance back up and get some consistency, I have just got to keep playing the way I always play," he said.

Garlett made his debut for Carlton in 2009 and has played 32 games with the club, kicking 58 goals.
