The Essendon Football Club has a reputation as a leader in the Australian sports industry, with a rich history spanning more than 140 years. Driven to be recognised and respected as the most successful sporting club in Australia, both on and off the field, we are now seeking a General Manager - Football to lead our Football Department.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the General Manager – Football will be responsible for:
  • Providing strong leadership, direction and structure in our football program
  • Overseeing and monitoring the workflow between staff within the Football Department to maximise productivity, effectiveness and overall outcomes, while ensuring all compliance requirements and deadlines are met
  • Ensuring the broader Club values and football philosophy is embraced across all staff and players, where everyone plays their role
  • Lead and coach the Football Department staff with regards to human resource practices, policies and procedures
  • Continually seeking best practice and innovation in teaching, development and leadership methods to ensure we retain and attract the best people, while ensuring we are best positioned to achieve success
  • Development and management of budgets and financial planning across the Football Department
  • Managing and engaging key internal and external stakeholders to achieve performance based outcomes
  • Driving a strong working relationship between the Football Department and greater organisation
  • Actively participate as a member of the Executive team
The successful candidate will have the following attributes:
  • Exceptional leadership and people management qualities, communication and technical skills
  • Ability to identify and drive efficient, effective and accountable working relationships across multiple divisions
  • Extensive experience in the management of an elite sporting or performance environment, preferably within an AFL Club but candidates with experience in other sports or performance environments, at a commensurate level, will be highly regarded
  • Knowledge of the AFL football structure, including an understanding of the rules, regulations and broader compliance requirements
  • Ability to make decisions under pressure and work within tight time constraints
  • Capable of working a wide array of hours with a varying time schedule to suit the seasonal priorities of the football industry
  • Relevant qualifications and certifications within management, business or a related field
