THE RED-hot Sydney Swans will be hard to beat for this year's premiership, West Coast midfielder Luke Shuey believes.

The Eagles lost to the Swans by 28-points in the wet on Sunday afternoon, just a week after losing to Fremantle in close-run Western Derby and a month after being dispatched by Hawthorn in Launceston.

Shuey said the Swans' midfield is arguably the deepest and most physical in the AFL.

"They'll probably be there (on the) last day in September again, which is my tip," Shuey told AFL.com.au.

"It was a taxing game. The best teams in the comp, you don't walk off feeling fresh."

The Swans collected 194 contested possessions, their highest total for the year, to the Eagles' 173 in horrendously wet conditions at Patersons Stadium.

The two sides laid a combined total of 197 tackles for the match, which is also a season-high for any game.

"They're a very good contested team," Shuey said.

"You go through their midfield and it goes about five or six deep in terms of elite inside players.

"They probably got on top of us all day in that area and we weren't able to hold up our end of the bargain.

"But still, 173 contested possessions would match it with most teams. But I think they went on a run early in the last quarter and kicked three in a row and put us to sleep so to speak."

The Eagles have hung tough with both the Swans and Dockers over the past two weeks but have lapsed for short periods to concede multiple goals in quick succession. They conceded three straight at the start of the last quarter against the Swans after conceding five straight to the Dockers the week before.

The Eagles also gave up six consecutive goals to blow a 35-point lead against Gold Coast in round 13, but they dug deep to nudge back in front and win.

Shuey said it is a steep learning curve for his team to try and stay in games against the best sides in the AFL.

"The results say that's probably a problem of ours," Shuey said.

"The best teams, they don't just go away in the game. You've got to make it happen.

"Unfortunately they did that to us today. They jumped us early in the last.

"When we needed to step up and do it to them we weren't able to. It's disappointing not to string four quarters together again but we'll keep working on it but I'm sure it's going to come our way soon."
