PORT ADELAIDE's internationally renowned fitness guru has denied the team is in a heavy training load, causing its recent form slump.

The Power have slipped from top spot to third in recent weeks, losing three of their past four matches.

Industry speculation had pointed to the club's training regime as a possible reason, but high performance manager Darren Burgess insists it's not the case.

"We're not in any kind of special phase or anything like that, we're just training regularly. We train them hard, but we're just training regularly and hopefully that'll stand us in good stead by the end of the year," Burgess told AFL.com.au.

Burgess, who is reportedly paid more than senior coach Ken Hinkley, rejected the suggestion the so-called 'Port Adelaide bubble' has burst.

"We don't think it has, we think we're still on track to where we want to get to by the end of the year," he said.

"There's no doubt when you only lose one or two games all year and then you lose three in four weeks people are going to start asking questions."

Burgess did concede that a heavier training load leading up to finals could be beneficial in the right circumstances.

"I think it could, if I thought we were a really top level team and we were five games clear on top, and you think that might be of some benefit to the team.

Burgess recently rejected overseas offers ranging from America's NFL to English Premier League soccer, instead signing a long-term deal to remain at Alberton Oval.

He said the Power's results over the past month also have a lot to do with their opposition.

"The little bit of criticism against Port is being a bit disrespectful to the Crows, they played really well," he said.

"We got within four points of the Swans, if it wasn't for Buddy Franklin we probably would have won the game, the Crows hammered us and Essendon played really well as well.

"I think we came up against three pretty good teams and they got the better of us on the day."

Port Adelaide travels to play Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
