FOUR-time premiership coach Leigh Matthews will put club politics aside to help the Brisbane Lions appoint their next senior coach.

Matthews will be part of a selection sub-committee charged with selecting Michael Voss' replacement, less than a week after he joined a rival ticket with current board members Paul Williams and Mick Power to oust Lions chairman Angus Johnson.

Matthews will be joined by former Hawthorn teammate Peter Schwab, CEO Malcolm Holmes, physical performance manager Brett Burton and non-voting AFL Coaches Association operations manager Paul Armstrong.

The club's general manager of football operations, Dean Warren, will chair the sub-committee.

The rival ticket formed in the belief that Johnson had "botched" the attempted recruitment of former Swans premiership coach Paul Roos after sacking Michael Voss less than two weeks ago.

Williams said Matthews' "selfless" decision to join the sub-committee had no bearing on the board challenge.

"He wanted to leave the politics aside and get involved with the club and help out. It's a huge plus and a great outcome for the club," Williams said.

"It doesn't mean anything in terms of the board, but it's just a good thing for the club.

"He can clearly make a significant contribution and he decided that's more important than any political issue at the moment."

Voss's sacking sparked a backlash by members demanding an extraordinary general meeting to force a board spill.

More than 1000 members have signed up to a Lions supporters' group website, The Lion's Roar, to request the EGM.

No submission has been made to the club at this stage as the rival ticket continues to search for a quicker resolution.

Warren said there were a number of high-quality candidates available to take Voss's job.

The sub-committee will invite candidates to take part in an interview process.

A recommendation following the interview process will then be made to the Board to ratify the appointment of the coach.
